CLIENT SERVICE

Big Lake Community Food Shelf operates as a choice model food shelf, which means clients get to select foods their families eat and know how to prepare. Food shelves have found this model best serves their clients’ needs, and cuts down on wasted food. On average, clients take home 50 pounds of food per person in the family during a visit. This consists of a combination of fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, milk, and other perishable and nonperishable items. How much a client can take depends on his or her family size, and availability.

FREEBIE FRIDAYS

Every Friday, anyone who needs a little extra help with their food budget is welcome to come to the food shelf between 11:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m.  This is a drive-up service.  Pull into the back parking lot where a volunteer will check you in, then drive to the front parking lot where a volunteer will place the pre-packed food into your vehicle.  This visit is an extra and does not affect your regular monthly visit. Watch for special added “Freebie” days posted on Facebook around holidays when we sometimes have surplus perishables.

COOKING CLASSES

Our cooking classes are provided during the summer.  These classes are intended to empower people to eat healthier and make the best use of their food resources.  The classes are set up in a take and bake style.  You get to come to class, learn new cooking skills and techniques, then bring your delicious meal home for everyone to enjoy.   Check our events page and Facebook to learn when our next class will be held!

POP UP PANTRY

Every Tuesday, anyone who needs a little extra help with their food budget is welcome to come to the food shelf between 11:00 a.m. through 12:30 p.m.  Come to the front door and get a number.  A volunteer will let a limited number of families in at a time (due to Covid 19 restrictions).  You will then be able to pick the food items you would like from what is available that day.  This visit is an extra and does not affect your regular monthly visit.  Watch for special added “Pop Up Pantry” days posted on Facebook around holidays when we sometimes have surplus perishables.
